There are various factors things you should do before
the interview.
The first of these is to Learn as much as you can about
the company before the interview, use whatever means
you have but a good place to start is the internet, visit their
website (if they have one) and read up on them. Also search
Yahoo or Google
for the companies name and see what you can dig up on them from
there. The next place is local papers and business publications,
or failing that, research the industry they work in and try
and find out exactly what they do and how they do it (and how
long they have been established, number of staff, turnover,
growth plans etc). Companies
House offers a company search facility if they are Limited
or PLC and for a small cost you can access their last years
accounts... This kind of information really impresses if you
can bring it up in the right context!
You have to Make a Good Impression at the
interview. So make sure you have a smart suit ready, polish
your shoes, have a haircut if needed, look clean and above all
appear confident but not arrogant. Even if you are very nervous
try and put the interview into context (it is ONLY an interview
after all!) and become detached from your emotions about how
much you may want the job.
Time Preperation - being on time for the interview
is critical. Being late is a really easy way to ensure you dont
stand a chance of getting the job! So work out your route to
the company where your interview is, if you drive, then use
multimap if you dont know where the company is located, and
if you are on Public Transport, ensure you know what you need
to catch and from where! Always have a backup plan in case a
bus is late or your car breaks down..... make sure you leave
plenty of time when you set off so you can turn to a backup
plan if needed and still have time to execute it. it is much
better to arrive an hour early and site in the car park until
15 minutes before the interview, than to arrive puffing and
panting with seconds to spare!
Take a Pen and Pad of Paper with you to the interview.
You would be wise to write down 5 or so 'choice' questions
that you want to ask at the end of the interview. See the interview
questions and answers in the Next
Section for more information.
